Eastman Charitable Foundation Strategic Plan

Executive Summary

March 2020 through December 2024

VISION:  The local environment is protected for the wellbeing of future generations.

MISSION:  To promote environmental stewardship, education and green recreation through grants and scholarships.

Definition of Terms

Local Environment: The watershed, lakes, streams, woodlands, open spaces and wildlife habitat in Enfield, Grantham, and Springfield, NH.

Wellbeing: a sense of balance among physical, emotional, and spiritual states.

Stewardship: The responsible use and protection of the natural environment through conservation and sustainable practices.

Education: Providing opportunities to learn about environmental and climate change challenges and    how to work toward sustainable solutions.

Green Recreation: Environmentally friendly outdoor activities, individual or communal, which foster an appreciation for the natural world and increase the sense of well-being.

MAJOR AREA OF FOCUS 1:  MISSION ADVANCEMENT

The Foundation will continue to fund grant proposals, scholarships, and to work collaboratively with other regional organizations whose work is consistent with ECF’s mission.

Goal A:  PROGRAMS — Continue ECF sponsored programs.

Goal B:  LAND CONSERVATION — Consider implementation of a land acquisition/conservation easement program in collaboration with local Land Trusts and conservation commissions to protect vulnerable acreage.

Goal C:  GRANT MANAGEMENT — Continue mission-specific grant making in the region.

Goal D:  PARTNERSHIPS — Actively pursue involvement in regional partnerships and collaborations that support ECF’s mission.

MAJOR AREA OF FOCUS 2:  INTERNAL STRUCTURE

The Foundation will be well-managed and organized, with clear roles and responsibilities for each Trustee.

Goal A:  OPERATION — Address internal operation of the Foundation. 

Goal B: INTERNAL COMMUNICATION — Update and strengthen methods of internal electronic communication and document retention.

MAJOR AREA OF FOCUS 3:  FINANCIAL SOLVENCY

The Eastman Charitable Foundation (ECF) will raise and manage funds responsibly to ensure continued support for on-going environmental and scholarship programs, and to ensure adequate funding is available for additional grant requests and new projects that fall within the Foundation’s mission.

Goal A:  BUDGET — Establish formal budget process, adopting an annual budget for the calendar year, with a required cash on hand stipulation.

Goal B:  SPECIAL PROJECTS — Trustees will determine the advantages/disadvantages of “project specific” fundraising on a case by case basis.

Goal C:  FUNDRAISING — Establish and expand fundraising capacity.

Goal D:  DONOR AND PUBLIC RELATIONS — Increase and update public relations methods and tracking.
